DUMAGUETE - The City of Gentle People

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

Dumaguete City is the gateway and the capital city of the Province of Negros Oriental located at the southwestern part of the Visayas group of Islands, Philippines. Dumaguete City is fondly known as the "City of Gentle People" due to the friendliness and warmth of her people. It is also known as a "University Town" or the "Learning Center of the South" due to the presence of four (4) prestigious Universities – the world-famous Siliman University (established in 1901) and three other popular universities (St. Paul's University-Dumaguete [1904], Foundation University and Negros Oriental State University [NORSU]).

Dumaguete City is also well known to foreign tourists, particularly Europeans, Westerners and Asians (specially the Japanese) due to its easy ferry access from and to Cebu City;  the availability of resorts with scenic white sand beaches and exotic dive sites; the attraction of aqua adventuring spots perfect for dolphin and whale watching in nearby Bais Bay; peaceful seaside boulevard; historical significance; restaurants with live bands; disco houses for clubbing and night life; and beautiful limestone caves and waterfalls for spelunkers. With its unique characteristics, Dumaguete has gained the distinction of being one of the most "livable islands in the world".

GEOGRAPHY (地理)

The City has a land area of 34.26 km², situated on the plains of the south-eastern coast of Negros Island near the mouth of the Banica River. Of the province's 20 municipalities and 5 cities, Dumaguete is the smallest in terms of land area. It is bounded by the Municipality of Sibulan on the north, the Municipality of Bacong on the south, and by the Municipality of Valencia on the west. As a coastal city, it is bounded on the east by the Mindanao Sea and the Tañon Strait, serving as a natural border to the neighboring provinces of Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor.

CLIMATE (氣候)

Dumaguete has 2 seasons - the dry and wet seasons. The wet season is from June to November, while the dry season is from December to May. The average maximum temperature is 34.3°C and the average minimum temperature is 22.9°C for the last couple of years. The relative humidity of the locality is 78¾%, highest during the month of December. The locality is rarely visited by typhoons and related calamities. Swimming, diving and water sports activities can be carried out through-out the year.

LANGUAGE (語言)

The primary spoken language is Cebuano. Majority of the population speak English fluently and have a comprehending knowledge of Spanish. Dialects spoken are Visaya, Tagalog and Ilonggo. The latter being the tongue of Negros Occidental residents.

當地母語是宿霧語(Cebuano)。多數的人口講英語流利並有理解知識西班牙語。方言是Visaya,菲律賓文和Ilonggo。後者是舌西內格羅斯居民。

Dumaguete City has a total population of 116, 392, comprising 9.05% of the province's total population as of census year 2007.

RELIGION (宗教)

The most dominant religion is Roman Catholic at over 90% of the population.
